A flat tire is one of those things that always happens at the worst possible time. You’re heading to work on Marine Drive, picking up the kids in Deep Cove, or parked at Park Royal — and suddenly your tire pressure warning comes on, or worse, you hear that unmistakable flapping sound.
Here’s a step-by-step guide for North Vancouver and West Vancouver drivers on exactly what to do, what NOT to do, and how to get back on the road fast.
Step 1: Pull Over Safely
The moment you suspect a flat, slow down gradually and find a safe spot to pull over. Don’t slam the brakes — a flat tire changes your vehicle’s handling, and sudden braking can make things worse.
- Turn on your hazard lights immediately
- Pull as far onto the shoulder or into a parking lot as possible
- Choose a flat, stable surface — avoid hills or soft ground
- If you’re on a busy road like the Upper Levels Highway or Marine Drive, move to a side street if you can safely do so
Step 2: Assess the Damage
Once you’re safely stopped, get out and take a look at the tire. You’re checking for:
- Visible puncture: A nail, screw, or piece of debris stuck in the tread. This is often repairable.
- Sidewall damage: A cut, bulge, or tear on the side of the tire. This is NOT repairable — the tire needs to be replaced.
- Completely flat vs. low: If it’s just low, you might be able to drive slowly to a safe location. If it’s riding on the rim, do NOT drive on it.
What NOT to Do
This is where many North Shore drivers make costly mistakes:
- Don’t drive on a completely flat tire. Even a few hundred metres on the rim can destroy the tire and damage your wheel — turning a $150 repair into an $800+ problem.
- Don’t use tire sealant (Fix-a-Flat) unless it’s a true emergency. The foam can damage your TPMS sensor and makes professional repair harder afterward. Read more in our TPMS guide.
- Don’t change the tire on a slope or soft ground. If your jack shifts, the results can be dangerous.
- Don’t ignore a slow leak. If your TPMS light keeps coming on after you inflate the tire, there’s a puncture that will only get worse.
Your Options on the North Shore
Once you’re safely pulled over, you have a few choices:
Option 1: Use Your Spare Tire
If you have a full-size or temporary spare, know how to use a jack safely, and you’re on flat ground, this can get you moving. But keep in mind:
- Temporary spares (donuts) are rated for 80 km/h max and should only be driven for short distances
- Many newer vehicles (especially EVs and SUVs) don’t come with a spare at all
- If you haven’t changed a tire before, trying it on a busy roadside isn’t the time to learn
Option 2: Call a Tow Truck
A tow to a North Shore tire shop will typically cost $100–$200, plus you’ll pay for the repair or replacement once you’re there. During peak times, you could be waiting 1–2 hours for the truck to arrive.
Option 3: Call a Mobile Tire Repair Service
This is where The Tire Valet comes in. We come to wherever you are on the North Shore — your driveway, your office parking lot, or the side of the road — and fix or replace your tire on the spot.
- No tow truck needed
- No driving on a damaged tire to reach a shop
- Puncture repairs done on-site when the damage is in the repairable zone
- If the tire can’t be saved, we can source and install a replacement
How to Prevent Flat Tires
While you can’t avoid every nail on the road, you can reduce your risk:
- Check your tire pressure monthly. Underinflated tires are more vulnerable to punctures and blowouts.
- Inspect your tires visually for embedded objects, cracks, or uneven wear.
- Replace worn tires promptly. Tires with low tread depth are more susceptible to flats. Shop for replacement tires here.
- Avoid road debris. Construction zones and poorly maintained roads increase flat tire risk.
